In addition to its beautiful shores and pure blue waters, the Caribbean island of Grenada is home to a wide diversity of marine life. There is a plethora of aquatic life in the seas surrounding Grenada, from colourful coral reefs to solemn marine turtles. Amazing aquatic life can be seen right off the shore of Grenada, and that’s what we’ll be talking about today.
Turtle Watching in Grenada
Grenada is one of the few places on Earth where you can observe three sea turtles simultaneously. Leatherback sea turtles are the most giant known amphibians, weighing up to 1,500 pounds. Green turtles lay their eggs on the beaches of Grenada from March to June. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to go snorkelling or scuba diving with Green and Hawksbill turtles in the waters around Grenada.
Giant leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coricea) visit the island in a bid to mate and lay their eggs on the very same beach that they were born on. This species is the largest of all sea turtles and is six feet long and three feet high. Seeing them land on the shoreline and make their way up the beach is breathtaking and remarkable. One of their favourite beaches is Levera Beach – just 15 minutes drive from the hotel.
We can book you in if you want to witness the leather back turtles with either the laying of the eggs or the hatching of the turtle babies. Other turtles that visit the island include the Loggerhead turtle, the hawksbill turtle and the Green Turtle. All of these species are either endangered or critically endangered, unfortunately.
Coral reefs
Grenada’s reef islets are home to an abundance of sea life. Parrotfish, angelfish, and butterflyfish are just some of the coral fish that can be found swimming between the stony and soft reefs. Scuba diving and swimming in the clear waters off the islands of Grenada are a must for any ocean lover.
Whale Watching in Grenada
Another way to see sea life in Grenada is to view some of the biggest mammals on the planet. Off the west coast of Grenada, humpback whales are a common sight between December and April. It is a sight to witness when one of these majestic creatures finally emerges from the water after being born in the Caribbean.
You can expect to see several species of whales off the coast of Grenada. These include the humpback, Killa (orca), Sperm and curvier-beaked whales. In fact, there are 15 or so different species to see. Whales have been sighted from the restaurant verandah, out at sea.
Seahorses
Several species of seahorses, including the long snout seahorse and the pygmy seahorse, make Grenada their permanent habitat. The seagrass beds and coral reef outcrops are common places to spot these elusive creatures. One of the best places to see seahorses in the wild in the Caribbean is on Grenada. This is another fun way to challenge the family when you’re out snorkelling – who can spot this rarer sea life in Grenada.
