Wildlife You’ll See in Grenada at Petite Anse Hotel

When people think of wildlife in Grenada, they may imagine dramatic rainforest creatures or exotic birds in the deep jungle. But here on the peaceful north coast — where Petite Anse Hotel sits tucked between tropical hills and the wild Atlantic — nature is quieter, closer, and often right outside your verandah.

Staying at Petite Anse Hotel means sharing your days with hummingbirds, cane toads, the occasional heron, and — if you wander beyond our garden gates — goats, donkeys, iguanas, and even nesting leatherback turtles. It’s one of the things our guests love most: the way nature is always nearby, never staged or forced, but beautifully part of the experience.

Here’s a look at the wildlife you’re most likely to encounter while staying with us at Petite Anse Hotel in Grenada.

Hummingbirds in the Garden

Our gardens are full of colour, and none draw more attention than the hibiscus — bright, blooming, and irresistible to hummingbirds. These tiny birds are one of the quiet joys of Petite Anse. Watch them over breakfast as they flit between flowers, wings buzzing, shimmering green and gold in the sunlight.

They’re especially active in the mornings and late afternoons, and you don’t need to go far to see them — they love the bushes right by the restaurant and cottage verandahs.

Wildlife in Grenada includes hummingbirds.

Cane Toads at Night

Not the most glamorous residents, but part of island life all the same! Cane toads often appear on the garden paths or near the restaurant after dark, especially after a rain shower.

They’re slow-moving, unbothered by people, and usually on the hunt for insects. Guests often spot them with a torch or during an evening stroll — a little reminder that the island keeps humming along, even when things seem quiet.

Goats on the Roadside

While not on our property, you’re almost guaranteed to see goats (and sometimes donkeys or chickens) on a walk to Duquesne Bay or in the village nearby.

They might be grazing, resting in the shade, or crossing the road without a care in the world. These are not zoo animals — they belong to local families and are very much part of the rhythm of life here.

Iguanas by the Sea

Iguanas are a bit harder to spot, but they love the sun-warmed rocks and cliff edges along the coast. Look carefully and you might spot one lounging quietly, blending into the greenery.

These shy creatures are often more afraid of you than you are of them, but with a bit of patience (and luck), you can see one up close — a real highlight for nature-loving guests.

Herons Along the Shore

The coastline around Petite Anse is rugged, rocky, and rich with birdlife. One of the most graceful visitors is the heron — tall, still, and focused. You might see one standing in shallow water, waiting patiently for a fish, or flying low over the waves in the early morning light.

They’re easiest to spot when the sea is calm, or around the inlets just beyond the hotel beach.

Leatherback Turtles at Levera Beach (April–June)

This is one of the most magical wildlife experiences in Grenada — and it only happens a short drive from Petite Anse.

From April to June each year, endangered leatherback turtles return to Levera Beach to lay their eggs. These gentle giants can weigh up to 900kg and often come ashore at night. We offer guided leatherback turtle watching tours (check out our direct booking offers), and guests regularly describe it as one of the most moving things they’ve ever seen.

It’s important to note that nesting is not guaranteed — nature has its own plans — but most guests who stay for 3+ nights during the season have the opportunity to witness it.

The Natural Soundtrack of Petite Anse

Even when you don’t see wildlife, you’ll feel it. The rustle of palm fronds, the buzz of insects, the call of unseen birds in the trees, and always — always — the steady rhythm of the waves.

It’s this connection to nature, gentle but constant, that guests tell us stays with them long after they’ve left.

Why It Matters

At Petite Anse, we don’t offer wildlife tours with binoculars and tour buses. What we offer is more subtle — a stay where nature is part of your daily life. Where you can hear frogs in the evening, see hummingbirds at breakfast, and take a walk past goats and wildflowers to a beach with nobody else on it.

If you’re looking for that kind of travel experience — real, unfiltered, and full of quiet discovery — we’d love to welcome you.
